Scottish Winter Mountain Courses

Winter hillwalking, mountaineering and climbing in Scotland, and in particular on Ben Nevis, is world famous. We offer courses for everyone, whether you are just starting out or have years of experience under your belt.

Scotland is renown for its challenging conditions, which we are grateful for as they are essential to build up the ice and rime which makes winter climbing here so unique. Winter mountaineering, ice climbing and hillwalking activities are invariably affected by the weather and the current snow and ice conditions. To enjoy this challenging environment it is just as important to develop your skills and understand the hazards as it is to experience your dream route or develop your climbing technique.

All of our guides and instructors that work on our Scottish winter courses have excellent local knowledge accumulated over many years of personal winter walking and climbing. They are able to ensure that the most is made of every day in the mountains meaning anyone attending with us will gain useful insights on how to plan your day and get the best out of it, even during the most challenging weather.

  • 5 star rating Liathach traverse Booked a guide for the Liathach traverse through West Coast Mountain Guides. The booking was arranged at short notice, with good communication from Ken throughout. The guide Jonty was excellent, good knowledge of the ridge and made it a great experience, even in not great conditions! Highly Recommended!

5 star rating Ascent of the Inn Pinn The time on the Cuillins with Ollie was superb. Ollie was very knowledgable both of the area and of mountaineering in general. We picked up a lot of invaluable knowledge about mountain navigation, ropework/abseiling techniques, and also about the geography of Skye and surrounding islands that can be seen from the top of the Cuillins.
All in all a great experience and would recommend West Coast Mountain Guides and Ollie to...

  • 5 star rating Aonach Eagach and Curved Ridge delight! First the Aonach Eagach in August 2018 followed a few months later on (June 2019) by the Curved Ridge ascent as a 40th birthday present 🙂
The AO traverse went perfect! Couldn’t have asked for anything more! Iain’s knowledge of the route was obvious from the outset which helped me calm my nerves a little bit (couldn’t sleep the night before from the adrenaline coupled up with my worry that I’ll...

5 star rating Cuillin Ridge Traverse - success! Wow, what an epic adventure! On the first day we started at 5am from Glenbrittle and made good progress - despite cloudy and wet conditions - over the traverse from Sgurr nan Eag to our planned bivouac site in a small cave just after Bidean Druim nan Ramh. To avoid some incoming bad weather we set off for the final few summits at 1am with some exciting... read more

5 star rating Excellent Cuillins guiding up Am Basteir My trip with Ollie was fantastic! He was very good company and knew the territory well despite being in the cloud. The roped trip up to Am Basteir was pretty straight forward. Ollie got me over the bad step and I felt very safe with his guiding.
Working with Ken to organize the trip from the US was easy to do over email. Everything went according to plan.

  • 5 star rating 40th birthday on Inn Pinn I had been increasingly anxious about tackling some of the Cuilin and the 40th seemed a good time to persuade friends and husband to come with me. We were fortunate with a glorious day and Ken was very competent and reassuring. What a thrill to do the Inn Pinn and then to learn how to move on a rope to climb Sgurr Mhic Choinnich also. I was also impressed that... read more

5 star rating Skye High Big thanks to West Coast Mountain Guides for getting my Canadian visitors and myself up the Cuillins and up, over and back down the inaccessible pinnacle. Our guide Josh inspired confidence every step of the way. Getting us out of our comfort zones whilst taking in some of the most jaw dropping scenery made for a fantastic adventure!

Our guide Gill Parker was a great mountain guide and provided free jelly babies. We all felt safe, well directed and had a great time. To be recommended, great conversation too.

5 star rating Tower Ridge 25th June 2019 Ken immediately made us feel welcomed and we had a good chat on the walk in before gearing up for the ridge ascent. Both my son and I had a fantastic experience thanks to Ken's calm, expertise in leading us over the ridge and the descending via Ledge Ridge to round off a great day. Highly recommended!

5 star rating Aognach eagnach ridge What an awesome day I had on Saturday tackling the ridge.
Josh was great- made it all seem really manageable (and safe). We were all pleased with our choices to go with a company/guide like yours especially when we met a couple who turned back when they saw what was ahead and later a chap who said he was stuck because his shoes had no grip.
    Josh was great with...
