Scottish Winter Mountain Courses

Winter hillwalking, mountaineering and climbing in Scotland, and in particular on Ben Nevis, is world famous. We offer courses for everyone, whether you are just starting out or have years of experience under your belt.

Scotland is renown for its challenging conditions, which we are grateful for as they are essential to build up the ice and rime which makes winter climbing here so unique. Winter mountaineering, ice climbing and hillwalking activities are invariably affected by the weather and the current snow and ice conditions. To enjoy this challenging environment it is just as important to develop your skills and understand the hazards as it is to experience your dream route or develop your climbing technique.

All of our guides and instructors that work on our Scottish winter courses have excellent local knowledge accumulated over many years of personal winter walking and climbing. They are able to ensure that the most is made of every day in the mountains meaning anyone attending with us will gain useful insights on how to plan your day and get the best out of it, even during the most challenging weather.

  • 5 star rating CMD Arete to the summit of Ben Nevis Having finished the WHW Sarah and I wanted to do Ben Nevis and decided that we would consult West Coast Mountain Guides and Ken talked through the routes that we could take and recommended the CMD Arete which when we talked through with the excellent guide Hannah Evans the day before we decided to do.
Hannah is a very experienced guide and she quickly assessed our capabilities and pace and ensured...

5 star rating Superb Days on mountains with excellent guide I booked through West Coast Mountain Guides for two different trips, and ended up using the same guide on both occasions. I was exceptionally pleased with the experience. I am a reasonably experienced hill walker, and was looking to step up with a guide to do some challenging scrambles in the Scottish highlands.
On both occasions I felt I was dealing with a guide who managed to balance the difficult combination...

  • 5 star rating So much more than simply showing us the way. Twice I've now been on the Cuillin ridge & used Ken & the guys from West Coast. Their knowledge of the ridge is excellent & they make sure routes chosen are suitable for the group. Their attention to everyone's safety is a priority & although on some pretty exposed areas, I never felt unsafe. They also considered each days weather & chose our days route accordingly.
    I would have no hesitation...

5 star rating Traversing the Cuillin ridge My husband and I were thinking about the Cuillin ridge traverse for a year and decided to finally give it a go. We looked into it and quickly realised that it might be quiet tricky so to increase our chances of success we booked it with West cost Mountain guides. And we were absolutely delighted when Ken contacted us to let us know that he found a guide for us.... read more

5 star rating What more could you want? Another very productive day out with Ken on the Forcan Ridge up in the West Highlands. During a week of very unsettled weather and after choosing a date months ago, we were blessed with excellent weather. The chilly wind was a delight which was a good job as I didn't have time to get my coat on! Ken is not one for dawdling in the mountains and the 14 miles... read more

  • 5 star rating Excellent scrambling trip on Skye The course was well run, with a good balance of safety and adventure. My highlights were scrambling the In Pin and the technical day on Sgur nan Gillean and An Bastiar. All 4 days offered some excellent routes and abseils. Ken and Steve were great guides and had good knowledge of the routes and the general mountain environment.

5 star rating Amazing Lochaber scrambling weekend Have just returned from three days scrambling with West Coast Mountain Guides. Ken guided three completely novice scramblers on some of the best routes in the area including Aonach Eagach Ridge, Ben Nevis (Castle ridge) and Buachaille Etive Mor (Curved Ridge). It was an incredible experience. We were all impressed by Ken's knowledge and professionalism and always felt safe throughout the experience. Importantly, he was also good company on the... read more

5 star rating Aonach Eagach ridge in damp conditions Having never been on a guided walk before I wasn't sure what to expect and got really nervous a few days before. I read over the info on your website that said that no experience of scrambling was needed, and that was reassuring, and our guide Ben was great at reassuring us on the day that we wouldn't do anything we didn't feel confident doing and at not making a... read more

5 star rating The Cuillins in early June Excellent and exciting trip completing the main Cuillin ridge over 4 challenging days led by Ken Applegate and Jamie. We experienced mixed weather - heavy rain, sunshine and mist.
Ken and Jamie are excellent leaders with the ability to always adopt a calm and methodical approach to the more difficult sections which inspires confidence and keeps things moving at a safe and sensible pace. Their knowledge of the mountains and the...

5 star rating The Cuillins in Mist and Some Rain My first trip to the Cuillins was in mixed weather four years ago so I had always intended to return in the hope of some better views. Sadly the weather was worse this time but Ken Applegate and Jamie Bankhead from West Coast took my group of 5 clients to the top of the 11 munros despite the wind and rain and mist. There may have been few... read more

5 star rating The Cuillin and the In Pin without waterproofs OK, I can't credit West Coast with arranging four days of brilliant weather but everything else they did was outstanding. i'm normally a solo walker and have done quite a lot of leading over the years, but felt the need for some professional input to get me up (and down!) the In Pin. If you don't know it, google a picture and you'll see why it has a reputation.... read more
