Scottish Winter Mountain Courses

Winter hillwalking, mountaineering and climbing in Scotland, and in particular on Ben Nevis, is world famous. We offer courses for everyone, whether you are just starting out or have years of experience under your belt.

Scotland is renown for its challenging conditions, which we are grateful for as they are essential to build up the ice and rime which makes winter climbing here so unique. Winter mountaineering, ice climbing and hillwalking activities are invariably affected by the weather and the current snow and ice conditions. To enjoy this challenging environment it is just as important to develop your skills and understand the hazards as it is to experience your dream route or develop your climbing technique.

All of our guides and instructors that work on our Scottish winter courses have excellent local knowledge accumulated over many years of personal winter walking and climbing. They are able to ensure that the most is made of every day in the mountains meaning anyone attending with us will gain useful insights on how to plan your day and get the best out of it, even during the most challenging weather.

  • 5 star rating Curved Ridge scramble West Coast Mountain Guides are a great team, very responsive and accurate from initial inquiries all the way through to the day of the climb. The route had to be changed the day before due to weather and Ken was very clear about what we would be doing, where we would be, and what to bring for the trip. Malcolm was a patient, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic guide who shared his... read more

5 star rating Great experience all around! Dear Ken and Malcolm,
We just wanted to say a huge thank you for our great adventure on Saturday up Curved Ridge.

Even though we were quite unlucky with the weather, we thought that you really put an effort in making sure we had a great time regardless of the weather – both with regards to the support and communication via email ahead of the day and the guiding...

5 star rating Epic hike into the Knoydart wilderness West Coast Mountain Guides are a great outfit. I got in touch with them to organise a bespoke hiking trip for myself and 3 friends with mixed abilities and goals - my own was to get out in to the wild and summit a few munros which needed to be balanced with a more "relax and enjoy nature" approach of the others. They were hands on from the start and... read more

5 star rating Mountain guide and accommodation. This is the second time I have used West Coast Mountain Guides for my climb of the Ledge Route of Ben Nevis.
On both occasions I have been delighted with both their hospitality and their professionalism .
This year our mountain Guide Mehmet made us both feel very competent in completing our climb.
After all our safety checks including clothing etc, we made our way to the base of our climb. All...

5 star rating 11 Munros on the Syke Cuillin Ridge with my son and Ken from WCM Guides Booked Ken from West Coast Mountain Guides for 3 days on the Skye Cuillin Ridge in July. Ken provided plenty of advice beforehand and booking was easy via the WCM Guides web-site. I had 11 Munros on Skye and 1 on Mull to complete my first Munro round. Met Ken at Sligachan to climb the first 3 Munros from there on Day 1 with my son and Ken. Second... read more

  • 5 star rating Fantastic ascent of the Choinnich and Inn Pinn For our first visit to the Isle of Skye we decided to look into booking a guide for a days walking in the Cuillins. Although, I have a fear of heights, we booked up the trip to the Inn Pinn, as it looked very scenic and exiting, and I was reassured by Ken at West Coast Mountain Guides that I could wait at the base while my husband did the... read more

5 star rating Two Austrians in Scotland We had two great days with Iain - thank you so much.
Day one - Buachaille Etive Mor, Curved Ridge and Crowberry Tower.
Day two - Ben Nevis via Tower Ridge and descend by Ledge route.
Wanted to climb Agag's Groove, looks like a cool climb but was too wet.
Everything was organized perfectly in advance (thanks to Ben and Ken).
Iain's knowledge of mountaineering and the area is excellent and he showed us...

5 star rating Liathach traverse Booked a guide for the Liathach traverse through West Coast Mountain Guides. The booking was arranged at short notice, with good communication from Ken throughout. The guide Jonty was excellent, good knowledge of the ridge and made it a great experience, even in not great conditions! Highly Recommended!

  • 5 star rating Ascent of the Inn Pinn The time on the Cuillins with Ollie was superb. Ollie was very knowledgable both of the area and of mountaineering in general. We picked up a lot of invaluable knowledge about mountain navigation, ropework/abseiling techniques, and also about the geography of Skye and surrounding islands that can be seen from the top of the Cuillins.
All in all a great experience and would recommend West Coast Mountain Guides and Ollie to...

5 star rating Aonach Eagach and Curved Ridge delight! First the Aonach Eagach in August 2018 followed a few months later on (June 2019) by the Curved Ridge ascent as a 40th birthday present 🙂
The AO traverse went perfect! Couldn’t have asked for anything more! Iain’s knowledge of the route was obvious from the outset which helped me calm my nerves a little bit (couldn’t sleep the night before from the adrenaline coupled up with my worry that I’ll...
