Scottish Winter Mountain Courses

Winter hillwalking, mountaineering and climbing in Scotland, and in particular on Ben Nevis, is world famous. We offer courses for everyone, whether you are just starting out or have years of experience under your belt.

Scotland is renown for its challenging conditions, which we are grateful for as they are essential to build up the ice and rime which makes winter climbing here so unique. Winter mountaineering, ice climbing and hillwalking activities are invariably affected by the weather and the current snow and ice conditions. To enjoy this challenging environment it is just as important to develop your skills and understand the hazards as it is to experience your dream route or develop your climbing technique.

All of our guides and instructors that work on our Scottish winter courses have excellent local knowledge accumulated over many years of personal winter walking and climbing. They are able to ensure that the most is made of every day in the mountains meaning anyone attending with us will gain useful insights on how to plan your day and get the best out of it, even during the most challenging weather.

5 star rating Awesome winter summit of "The Ben"! My husband and I did a winter ascent of The Ben on 1/2/19 and it was totally awesome! Our guide Mehmet was wonderful, very knowledgeable, and I highly recomment West Coast Mountain Guides if you're thinking of conquering The Ben in winter. Great experience!

5 star rating Ben Nevis Winter Climb Dec 2018 For the second consecutive year, my son & I included a winter climb with West Coast Mountain Guides to our travel plans. On both occasions the overall experience exceeded our expectations. Ken is extremely knowledgeable and professional - you'll be in safe hands under his guidance & leadership. I'd highly recommend West Coast Mountain Guides to lead your next adventure.

5 star rating Guided trek up Ben Nevis Dec 2018 I found West Coast Mountain Guides via a Google search. Ken was helpful and responsive to my questions and we booked a guide for 3 of us to trek up Ben Nevis on Dec 28th. Sally was excellent as our guide: knowledgable, sensible, cheerful, practical, good pace, accommodating of our different needs and able to put up with our chattering and different fitness levels! The kit list on the web... read more

5 star rating Amazing winter hike We wanted to finish the West Highland Way by climbing Ben Nevis. Because of the infamous Scottish winter weather we decided to book a private tour with West Coast Mountain Guides and never regretted doing so. Ken was very fast in answering all our questions and even managed to comply with a last minute change of dates. Our guide Ben did an amazing job and made us feel safe despite... read more

5 star rating 4 days of snow and adventure Just completed a fabulous 4 days mountaineering course with Ken as our knowledgeable guide. The recent weather meant that the snow pack generally wasn't the best but Ken's knowledge of the area meant that he found us the locations with the conditions we needed to experience and learn the skills we would need to climb and move safely in the snow and ice. We did 3 great routes on 'The... read more

5 star rating Skye Scramble West Coast Mountain Guides took Sophie and I scrambling up into The Cuillin for a day at the very end of November, something Sophie and I would never have done on our own. We’re both experienced outdoors, but armchair mountaineers, so asked them to “take us out our comfort zone”. Ken definitely did that and, after discussing a few view various route options with us, settled on guiding us up... read more

5 star rating Unforgettable experience Ken took me and my son up the north face ledge route to the top of Ben Nevis. It was a fantastic experience for my 50th and my son’s 18th birthdays. I would definitely recommend doing something like this rather than taking the standard tourist route. It was a challenge - particularly with the snow and ice - but Ken is so experienced he makes it manageable.

5 star rating Wonderful Service I was quite a painful customer as had a choice of two days, but ended up having to do it on the day we intended to drive home, because of the weather conditions, so needed an early start. Ken replied to ALL my e mails and phoned me, so I felt reassured that we would be able to complete our last peak and the 10 hour drive had been worth... read more

5 star rating Safe and professional We booked a private guide for two people for a week of scrambling on the Skye Cuillin. Our aim was to climb as many of the 11 Munros on the main Cuillin ridge as we could in five days.
Despite some pretty bad weather conditions, we managed to get out for some scrambling every day, and succeeded in climbing 8 of the 11.
We were very happy with our guide Andy Hogarth,... read more

5 star rating Lashed on Liathach I am a hill bagger attempting to climb all the Munros, tops and deleted tops – some 601 in total. Now almost half way through this wonderful challenge, I have had quite a bit of walking experience but possess very little expertise in scrambling and heaven forbid, climbing. Consequently, I asked Ken to help me over a couple of the trickier routes being the An Teallach ridge and Meall Dearg... read more
