Private Mountain Guiding and Instruction

Hire your private mountain guide.
Our high levels of qualifications and experience, coupled with excellent local knowledge and friendly approach will ensure safe and rewarding adventures.

Engaging the services of your private mountain guide, at anytime of the year, is available as a popular alternative to attending a set mountaineering course with other people. Together we will design a bespoke itinerary that will meet your requirements and help you to achieve your ambitions, whether you are an individual or part of a group.  The duration and location can be tailored to your requirements.

One of the main advantages of private mountain guiding is that is is delivered entirely around your aspirations. A flexible approach enables the pace of the course and level of challenge to be easily adjusted to match your ability and experience. This ensures that skills are developed progressively and at a suitable pace.

All of the mountain guides, instructors and leaders that we employ for all of our courses are all very active mountaineers and climbers. All have climbed and walked extensively throughout the UK and many have been on adventurous expeditions around the world. With such a wealth of experience, we will make sure that we find the right professional for you.

West Coast Mountain Guides enjoy the challenge of accommodating even the wildest requests; allow us to help provide you a safe and enjoyable time in the mountains.

Private mountain guiding and instruction ratios will depend on the type of activity requested. Prices will reflect the location, duration and number of people who want to participate. Please see below for our pricing structure. If you would like some help with your request or wish to discuss ideas and options with an experienced instructor, please get in touch.

  • 5 star rating Great Weekend with WCMG After some lean winter conditions it was great to arrive in Fort William and know that Ken had some ideas for our weekend climbing up his sleeve. Always adaptive to whats happening at any given point in the mountains Ken guided us up No3 Gully Buttress on day 1 and Tower Ridge on day 2 as conditions improved. Both as ever were done whilst passing on his vast knowledge and... read more

5 star rating Amazing ice climbing day out on Ben Nevis with Mark Scales My friend and I went for a multi-pitch ice climbing on Ben Nevis end of January with Mark (the guide) leading/equipping the entire route and us following behind on top-rope. It was the perfect amount of challenge for such a short trip and Mark has been really helpful with equipment and picked an amazing route for us. We were also really lucky with the conditions (it was sunny!!). Mark really... read more

5 star rating Private Winter Mountaineering This was our second trip with WCMG - highly recommend! This time we had two great days of private winter mountaineering in Glencoe with Dave Fowler! Dave was very professional and knowledgeable, and qualified to provide something a ‘wee bit more technical’ than just hillwalking (as Ken described it). We learnt a lot from him and felt safe despite the challenging conditions with stormy weather! On the first day we... read more

  • 5 star rating Private Winter Mountaineering Had a great three days for our private winter mountaineering course with Ken! Ken covered a variety of topics that allowed us to be more comfortable during Scottish winter conditions. Ken answered any and all of our questions - which there were many. We're really excited to use our new skills out in the Scottish Highlands thanks to West Coast Mountain Guides.

5 star rating Bespoke Winter Mountaineering Skills Had a great time with Ken over three days and more importantly learned enough to greatly increase our confidence covering technical terrain in Winter. Despite the lean conditions this season, west coast mount guides worked with us to pick the best days. With the private guiding we were able to tailor the routes to focus on the skills we wanted to learn. First day on the Ben covering crampon... read more

  • 5 star rating Cracking Winter Skills day Fantastic day with Andy on the North face of Ben Nevis making best use of the snow conditions to learn a variety of winter skills. Very pleased we booked privately as the extra attention allowed us to push ourselves and get some really valuable feedback. Great too to see the emphasis on practice of footwork without crampons and making decisions for the day. Andy's knowledge and enthusiasm was faultless, really... read more

5 star rating Westcoast came up with the goods once again It's no coincidence that even in very thin winter climbing conditions, westcoast find routes that still deliver. The proof is that the following day you will see everyone else queuing up to do the route you did the day before.

5 star rating Will keep coming back to these guys again and again. I was so impressed when I climbed with Ken from West Coast Mountain Guides last year that I came back again this year and would only use him. Ever professional, friendly, knowledgable and patient, Ken really is a great guide and has built a great company here. With me being fairly new to the scene, Ken is slowly building up the grade of routes and in-turn, my confidence and knowledge.... read more

  • 5 star rating Outstanding Guided Climbs around Fort William I spend 4 days with 2 different West Coast guides (Dave and Niels). They were both terrific, I learned an incredible amount in a short time and would highly recommend. The weather was softer/wetter than I hoped but it didn't stop us finding lots of places to have fun. The guides were very responsive to my matching my development needs to the changeable weather conditions. They are both incredible... read more

5 star rating Winter mountaineering trip up the Ben Ken & West Coast Mountain guides organised an absolutely fantastic couple of days with their guide, Stuart, for myself and my 9-year old son and a friend and his son. We all learnt a lot and gained in confidence for tackling the hills in the winter, which was the objective, including all sorts of winter skills & poor visibility navigation. Ken offered great advice and support pre trip & Stuart... read more
