Private Mountain Guiding and Instruction

Private Guiding forms a large part of our work. Our high levels of qualifications and experience, coupled with excellent local knowledge and friendly approach will ensure safe and rewarding adventures.

Private Mountain Guiding and Instruction is available as a popular alternative to attending a set mountaineering course with other people. Together we will design a bespoke itinerary that will meet your requirements and help you to achieve your ambitions, whether you are an individual or part of a group.  The duration and location can be tailored to your requirements.

One of the main advantages of private guiding is that is is delivered entirely around your aspirations. A flexible approach enables the pace of the course and level of challenge to be easily adjusted to match your ability and experience. This ensures that skills are developed progressively and at a suitable pace.

All of the mountain guides, instructors and leaders that we employ for all of our courses are all very active mountaineers and climbers. All have climbed and walked extensively throughout the UK and many have been on adventurous expeditions around the world. With such a wealth of experience, we will make sure that we find the right professional for you.

West Coast Mountain Guides enjoy the challenge of accommodating even the wildest requests; allow us to help provide you a safe and enjoyable time in the mountains.

Private Guiding and Instruction ratios will depend on the type of activity requested. Prices will reflect the location, duration and number of people who want to participate. Please see below for our pricing structure. If you would like some help with your request or wish to discuss ideas and options with an experienced instructor, please get in touch.

Guiding Tower Ridge in Winter

One of the most popular options for private mountain guiding in winter is the magnificent Tower Ridge on Ben Nevis. The below video features Alan Kimber, former owner and founder of West Cost Mountain Guides, climbing and describing the ascent of Tower Ridge.

Excellent day on the North Buttress of the Buachaille with Nick from WCMG. Weather was Scottish and stormy, but Nick put in a great lead and we climbed all four pitches in a growing storm before abbing off. I suspect not many teams were climbing that day but we got a great, safe route done – testament to skill of the WCMG guides!

Ken from West Coast Mountain Guides managed to expertly guide us along the Forcan Ridge on an amazing day with stunning surrounds. Three of us in the group and a mixed range of ability; Ken was able to cater for all. Would have been much more challenging had the weather been poor…but we were lucky to get the last great day of Autumn!

I had 2 days on the Skye Cuillin munros on the weekend 22/23 October 2016. I tried to organise the trip to suit a favourable weather window at short notice and the guys couldn’t have been more helpful and knowledgeable to make this happen for me. My guides knowledge of the ridge and the views where also first class as was his skillful rope work. Days never to be forgotten thanks to West Coast Mountain Guides.

An excellent day out introducing my daughter Emily to the delights of exposure on a classic Ben Nevis route. Having Steve there to take care of everything meant I could just relax and enjoy the views with the other member of our trio Callum. Professional in every way from start to finish, accommodating last minute plan changes for the weather and an additional member of the party. Thank you Steve and Hannah for organising it all!

My wife and I (on our honeymoon) had a fantastic day being guided by Scott on the Cuillin ridge on Skye. Scott was brilliant – extremely professional, friendly and confident, and helpful with all sorts of advice. He gave us the confidence and assurance that we could do what we set out to, and was cool, calm and collected throughout.
Would have no hesitation in recommending West Coast Mountain Guides to anyone looking for an awesome day that can be as challenging or as easy as you make it.
5 stars (at least!)

A great day out with Scott up Curved Ridge on Buachaille Etive Mor. Instruction of scrambling belays and some leading up less critical sections and abseil system demonstrated later in the day. Have used West Coast Mountain Guides before and would continue to recommend and use in future.

Excellent day with Ken, West Coast Mountain Guides in Coire na Ciste. We did Green Gully which was in great condition and no one else on it! Five pitches of quality climbing and topping out in fantastic weather on the ridge. 17/3/16.
