Hi Alan, Orion Direct step cutting? - yes, it has been done again. Back in 86 Ulric and I chopped our way up in a steady 9 hrs ... good neve conditions and finishing with 1 axe between us, as the other snapped above the second slab rib. Extremely satisfying day out and done as something of a homage to Smith and Marshall. Over the previous couple of years, Ulric and I had picked away at their set of climbs from Feb 1960, with modern gear. Orion Direct was our last one of the set so we thought it only fit to go back to something of the old stylee. Quite definitely one of my most enjoyable days on the hill. Did take ice screws and half-decent ropes, though - maybe daft but not stupid! Hope Dave and Andy do go for the step cutting approach; we enjoyed it so much we went back again and cut steps up Smiths Route, this time by the icicle. Best of luck to them. Hamish
Thanks Hamish,
Did you take any photos? Might be worth putting you in touch with the Mountain Festival to offer an interesting archive of your day out on such a fine climb.
