Raven's Edge

Sunday, 7 June 2009

Alan, Did Raven's Edge on Saturday; an excellent mountain route. We found the attached piece of gear en route; what seems to be a (broken!) aluminium peg stamped Peck, and the rusty remains of a genuine nut, both on a piece of old hawser-laid hemp. Wonder when that dates from, and what epic tale it has to tell.

Duncan
Thanks Duncan. Peck were a make of pitons.

Biven & Peck were a climbing partnership, late 50’& 60’s, that climbed many of the then thin crack climbs on Millstone, Peak District. Over time these artificial climbs were widened by use of pegs until they were able to be free climbed, i.e. the Embankment routes. From that experience Peck developed a range of pitons. (Peter) Biven moved to Exeter where he pioneered many climbs in the South West, in the process helping to bring on a local climber - a certain Pat Littlejohn, who in turn went on to great things. Biven died in a fall whilst climbing in Avon Gorge in the 70’s
