Great Conditions

Sunday, 20 January 2008

Dear Alan,

Many thanks for your excellent website.

Just writing to let you know about some fantastic conditions on North East Buttress - good neve for first time placements, some ice forming low down taking screws however little on the Mantrap or 40 Corner so needed the Tough-Brown Variant to avoid a very late finish!

A strong Hungarian team found Point 5 challenging, whilst a Chester pair completed Cresta without too many problems - however the icy pitch at the top proved to be high in the grade.

One last request Alan please - would you mind advertising that we lost a Charlet Moser Axar (Adze) somewhere between the summit and car park (descent via Red Burn) on Saturday evening. Would you mind passing on email details if anyone comes forward? Or mobile no 07775 946216.

Many Thanks jeremy windsor

Hi Al, In the good old days the retrievel of lost/dropped gear would go to the locals - namely Hamish Mc's who use to scour the cliff bases in spring.
You should make sure the clumsy climbers these days put a reward on their lost picks etc. This way a teams choice of route may well depend not on the conditions and quality of the climbing, but on the amount of free booty strewn in the vicinity!

Thanks Mark,

My policy has always been to give back gear if I know who it belongs to. Most of the stuff I find I keep, as it is not marked. My best haul was four axes in one day in the spring on Ben Nevis, but I have heard of seven axes found in one day. Other 'booty' has included watches and cash. One stream of gear had fallen out of a climber's back pocket as they slide down the Red Burn, jettisoning the contents of their wallet as they went.

Another time I found a Collie Dog lost above Glen Coe. We encouraged it down with Mars Bars and handed it in at the Police Station. Never heard a word of thanks from it's owner though!
